Paperback (Outskirts Press, May 30, 2018)
As more and more children spend much of their time indoors, this book takes them on a magical adventure outdoors. It all begins on a warm spring day when Miss Susan decides to take her class outside to read under the giant Beech tree on the edge of the school grounds. Some of them even climb up into the tree to read. Their schoolyard is like many others - very plain; expanses of grass with an occasional tree, some evergreen shrubs and asphalt playgrounds. The children enjoy reading outside so much, they begin to do this whenever there is a nice day. She teaches them how, when she was a girl, they used to look at the puffy clouds and find shapes. Then one day, a very unusual, very large butterfly comes to their tree and catches their attention by landing on Rashelle's nose and fluttering between the children until finally landing on Miss Susan's head. Ezra snaps a picture with Miss Susan's iPhone. They want to know more about this butterfly, but no one they show the picture to has any answers, not even the professors at the university. Upon the advice of Mr. Sam, the oldest and wisest person in town who smiles when asked about this butterfly, they decide to follow it and see where it goes... What they discover is the beauty and magic of the nearby forest that had been forgotten for decades as children now spent all their time indoors. That the butterfly is not what it seemed. It is really Miss Zena, the magical guardian of the forest. She had chosen this class of children to make a difference for their school. They learn how to plan and create that same beauty they discovered in the forest on their school grounds. Principal Shannon and Miss Susan invite the whole school to assist Miss Susan's students to create this magical nature space "The Enchanted Garden". They work hard and the children learn that they really do have the power to make a difference around them.
